Usage Examples

Basic Logging

from tradingagents.utils import get_logger

# Get a logger for your component
logger = get_logger("tradingagents.my_component", component="MY_COMP")

# Log at different levels
logger.debug("Detailed debugging information")
logger.info("General information")
logger.warning("Warning message")
logger.error("Error occurred")

# Log with context
logger.info(
    "Processing trade decision",
    extra={
        "context": {
            "ticker": "AAPL",
            "decision": "BUY",
            "confidence": 0.85
        }
    }
)

API Call Tracking

from tradingagents.utils import get_api_logger

api_logger = get_api_logger()

# Log successful call
api_logger.log_call(
    provider="openai",
    model="gpt-4",
    endpoint="/v1/chat",
    tokens=150,
    cost=0.003,
    duration=250.5,
    status="success"
)

# Get statistics
stats = api_logger.get_stats()
print(f"Total calls: {stats['total_calls']}")
print(f"Total tokens: {stats['total_tokens']}")

Performance Tracking

from tradingagents.utils import get_performance_logger
import time

perf_logger = get_performance_logger()

# Track operation timing
start = time.time()
# ... do something ...
duration = (time.time() - start) * 1000

perf_logger.log_timing(
    "analyst_execution",
    duration,
    context={"analyst": "market", "ticker": "AAPL"}
)

# Get average timing
avg = perf_logger.get_average_timing("analyst_execution")

# Log summary
perf_logger.log_summary()

Configuration

Default Configuration

DEFAULT_CONFIG = {
    # ... other config ...

    # Logging settings
    "log_level": "INFO", # DEBUG, INFO, WARNING, ERROR, CRITICAL
    "log_dir": "logs", # Directory for log files
    "log_to_console": True, # Enable console output
    "log_to_file": True, # Enable file output
}

Custom Configuration

from tradingagents.utils import configure_logging

# Configure at startup
configure_logging(
    level="DEBUG",              # More verbose
    log_dir="custom_logs",      # Custom directory
    console=True                # Console output
)

Benefits

1. Better Debugging

Before:

print(f"Memory enabled")
print(f"Added {count} items")

After:

logger.info(
    "Memory enabled with provider: openai",
    extra={"context": {"provider": "openai", "model": "text-embedding-3-small"}}
)

logger.info(
    f"Added {count} situations",
    extra={"context": {"count": count, "collection": "bull_memory"}}
)

Result:

  • Full context in every log message
  • Timestamps for timing analysis
  • Easy filtering by component
  • Separate error logs

2. Production Monitoring

  • Track API usage and costs
  • Monitor performance metrics
  • Identify bottlenecks
  • Audit trail for decisions
  • Error tracking and alerting

3. Performance Analysis

Performance Summary:
- graph_initialization: avg 1234ms, min 987ms, max 2100ms
- propagation: avg 5432ms, min 4321ms, max 7890ms
- embedding_generation: avg 45ms, min 32ms, max 78ms
- add_situations: avg 123ms, min 98ms, max 156ms

4. API Cost Tracking

API Call Statistics:
- Total calls: 1,234
- Total tokens: 456,789
- By provider:
  - openai: 234 calls, 123,456 tokens
  - openrouter: 1000 calls, 333,333 tokens

Testing

Test the Logging System

# Run built-in tests
python3 -m tradingagents.utils.logging_config

# Output:
# Testing TradingAgents Logging System
# ======================================================================
# 2025-01-15 10:30:00 | INFO     | TEST | This is an info message
# 2025-01-15 10:30:00 | WARNING  | TEST | This is a warning message
# 2025-01-15 10:30:00 | ERROR    | TEST | This is an error message
# ...
# Logging test complete. Check the 'logs' directory for output files.

Verify Log Files

# Check log directory
ls -lh logs/

# View main log
tail -f logs/tradingagents.log

# View errors only
tail -f logs/errors.log

# View API calls
tail -f logs/api_calls.log

Migration Guide

For Existing Code

  1. Import the logger:

    from tradingagents.utils import get_logger
    logger = get_logger("tradingagents.component", component="COMP")

  2. Replace print statements:

    # Before
    print(f"Processing {item}")

    # After
    logger.info(f"Processing {item}", extra={"context": {"item": item}})

  3. Add context to important logs:

    logger.info(
        "Operation complete",
        extra={
            "context": {
                "operation": "process_trade",
                "ticker": "AAPL",
                "duration_ms": duration
            }
        }
    )

Log Rotation

Logs automatically rotate when they reach size limits:

logs/
├── tradingagents.log       # Current (up to 10 MB)
├── tradingagents.log.1     # Previous rotation
├── tradingagents.log.2     # Older
├── tradingagents.log.3
├── tradingagents.log.4
└── tradingagents.log.5     # Oldest (then deleted)

Best Practices

DO

# Use appropriate log levels
logger.debug("Variable x = 42")           # Detailed debugging
logger.info("Analysis complete")          # Important milestones
logger.warning("API rate limit at 80%") # Potential issues
logger.error("Database connection failed") # Actual errors

# Include context
logger.info(
    "Trade executed",
    extra={"context": {"ticker": "AAPL", "price": 150.50}}
)

# Track performance
start = time.time()
result = expensive_operation()
perf_logger.log_timing("expensive_op", (time.time() - start) * 1000)

# Track API calls
api_logger.log_call(
    provider="openai",
    model="gpt-4",
    endpoint="/v1/chat",
    tokens=150,
    status="success"
)

DON'T

# Don't use wrong log levels
logger.error("Successfully completed") # Error is wrong level
logger.debug("User logged in") # Too noisy for DEBUG

# Don't log without context
logger.info("Done")                       # Not useful

# Don't forget to track performance
expensive_operation()                     # No timing

# Don't ignore API calls
api_client.call(...)                      # No tracking

Troubleshooting

No Logs Appearing

Problem: Console and files are empty

Solution:

# Check log level
from tradingagents.utils import set_log_level
set_log_level("DEBUG")

# Verify configuration
from tradingagents.utils import configure_logging
configure_logging(level="INFO", console=True)

Too Verbose

Problem: Too many DEBUG messages

Solution:

# Increase log level
set_log_level("INFO")  # or WARNING, ERROR

Missing Context

Problem: Context dict not showing

Solution:

# Use proper format
logger.info(
    "Message",
    extra={"context": {"key": "value"}}  # ← Must use this format
)

Performance Impact

  • Initialization: ~50ms (one-time cost)
  • Logging overhead: ~0.1-0.5ms per log message
  • File I/O: Async buffering minimizes impact
  • Rotation: Happens in background

Recommendation: Use INFO level in production for optimal balance.

Future Enhancements

Potential improvements:

  • Async logging for zero-impact performance
  • Cloud integration (AWS CloudWatch, GCP Logging)
  • Real-time log streaming dashboard
  • Log analytics and aggregation
  • Structured JSON output option
  • Compression for archived logs
  • Email/Slack alerts for critical errors
  • Log sampling for high-volume scenarios
